The Best Day Trips from London

I have spent so much time exploring London and I can say for sure that one can never get tired of it. Anyhow, sometimes you feel the need to escape to the countryside or just to see what else is there. The perfect solution is to take day trips from London, and to most of the places you can get in less than 2 hours.

Day Trips From London

Bedford

We never planned a trip to Bedford but we ended up there by chance. We were heading to Cambridge but one of our friends saw a sign that was saying Cambridge so we took off at the next station. We took a stroll and were surprised to find out that we were not in Cambridge but in Bedford. It was a nice city it really was. The only problem was that our trip to Cambridge was shorter but we still managed to make the most of it.

day trips from london

Cambridge

As I said before, the first time I went to Cambridge I didn`t have the chance to see everything that I have planned, but for that reason I went there again and I had an awesome experience, both times. The first time I visited this old University City was in August and the second time was in December. So if you are asking me what is the best season to visit Cambridge I would say, every season is perfect. The overall atmosphere of the city is so relaxed even though it is always packed with tourist. So tell me, is there a better place to study or not?

day trips from london

Oxford

Oxford is another university city that is very popular not only in England but in the whole world. It is only 75 minutes away and it makes it perfect for a day trip from London. Oxford is a bit smaller in size than Cambridge but white I liked better here is that you can access some universities, actually some parts like libraries. If you are a Harry Potter fan than this is the perfect city for you since some parts of the film were shot here.

day trips from london

day trips london

EXTRA TIP: There are tours that are trying to squeeze in Oxford and Cambridge in one day but I would highly recommend you to avoid them. You need time to explore both cities, and the best thing you can do is to catch the earliest train from London and than the last train from Oxford or Cambridge to London.

Brighton

Brighton is a sea side town that I have been to twice and I would love to go again. This is probably my favourite day trip from London mainly because I love the sea. The beach was almost always empty because the town can be quite windy even in July. The pier is fantastic with lots of things to do, food to eat and at the  end there is one exciting ride that you have to try. I would also suggest that you visit the Royal Pavillion. Check the opening hours and admission price here. If you purchase the tickets online you receive 10 % off.

day trips from london

St. Albans

I used to live in Radlett which is only 15 minutes away from St. Albans so I have been to this amazing place numerous times. Every Saturday there is an open market so the city has a different vibe.

day trips from london

Cotswolds

Costwolds is not a very popular area with the tourists. But if you ask a local where you should go for a weekend away, Costwolds would be probably on the top of their list. This is an area of hidden villages and to visit it you need to take a car or better yet find a tour on TripAdvisor. These villages are inaccessible by public transportation and for that reason you can explore them with this tour from TrpAdvisor named Secret Cottages. The best part is you will be invited inside one of the houses for a tea and lunch.

day trips from london

Windsor

There is a reason why Windsor Castle is Queen`s favourite, it is amazing, simple as that. Another great thing is that it is so close to London and you also have Eton College to explore as well.

day trips from london

Canterbury

As a student I was reading Chaucer`s Canterbury Tales and I never even imagined that I will visit the same place as the pilgrims from the stories. Do not miss the Canterbury Cathedral while you are there.

day trips from london

Stratford Upon Avon

Stratford Upon Avon is Shakespeare`s birth place and for someone who is Literature buff this place is heaven. This little town has many things to offer. If you are planning to visit you can check the official site and find what is on.

day trips from london

Bath

There is only one landmark that you should not miss for the world if you are in Bath and that is the Roman Baths which were discovered in 836 BC. This is a real classic English city that is so pretty and you will definitely want to go back again.

Arundel

I am obsessed with castles and for that reason Arundel found a place on my list of day trips from London. I cannot find the right reason why I love castles so much, maybe because I was studying British History for so long or maybe because I still read fairytales. No matter what the reason is, if you have the chance to visit this lovely castle you should. The castles dates back to 1067 and it was established by Roger de Montgomery.

Dover

For some reason Dover is overlooked by the tourists, but I can tell you this, there is nothing like walking along the cliffs. There is also a castle so you have plenty of things to do while you are in Dover. If you are a World War history buff you will love this place since you are going to learn a lot about the history here.

Paris

It is so easy to go to Paris on a day trip from London thanks to Eurostar. You need only 2.5 hours to get there and I believe there is no reason to explain why Paris is a good idea for a day trip.

If you happen to decide for Paris you can read my article about 10 Things You Must See on Your First Visit to Paris.

Day trips from London that I didn`t take

Rye, Winchester and Stonehenge are all popular and very easy to get from London, but I couldn`t make it. If you are planning a day trip from London you can take these places in consideration and let me know how the trip went because I would really want to hear from you guys.

Now that I am going through the list of day trips I realize that I have visited most of the cities twice. I am obviously a travel addict and I wouldn`t mind to go there again.

More Than a Day Trip from London

If you decide to stay longer in one of these places I won`t judge you because I would too. If you are looking for accommodation you can find the best places on Booking.com according to your price range, since that is the website that I always use when I am looking for accommodation. You can also rent an apartment with AirBnb, use this code to get $27 free AirBnb credit.

Ah I love this post! I actually go to London to visit family periodically and it’s great to know that there are awesome day trips just outside the city, something I’ve been wanting to do, but never had the time. For sure the next time I’m in London, I will try to make it to one of these places!

What a great roundup of London day trips. I remember visiting Costwolds many moons ago and being blown away by how absolutely beautiful it is. It’s like walking into a fairytale. I could stay there forever, even if I just did someone’s garden for them

I lived in England for 2 months and I didn’t do any of this! I love all the photos. I am absolutely obsessed with the houses that have cross beams (is that what they’re called) on the outside. It’s so very European and lovely!

This looks like so much fun. I don’t travel much, but I love to read about journeys and see pictures. Thank you for sharing and letting me see it through your eyes!
